We celebrated the International Day of Mother Earth with a small group of enthusiasts by watching the movie “Before the Flood”. The documentary was written by Mark Monroe, directed by Fisher Stevens, and released on October 21, 2016. The event was part of the “Our Response to Climate Change” initiative.
Meruert Argimbayeva, a social entrepreneur and the director of the “Radost” charity store, shared her impressions about the film with us: “The film deeply impressed me, even though it came out 7 years ago! Even considering that I know more about global warming than the average Kazakh! The filmmakers did a great job of showing that no one can be left out. All inhabitants of the planet Earth already feel the consequences of global warming. After watching the film, we spent another hour discussing what we can do in Karaganda to prevent the disaster. We concluded that continuing to lead a conscious way of life is necessary.”
Aigul Malikova, director of the EcoMuseum, also shared her thoughts about the film: “The movie highlights unexpected connections. For example, between palm oil and flooding cities in California, rain forests and ocean heating, burning coal in Asia and bleached coral reefs dying in the oceans and so much more that boggles the mind. The film gives an understanding of the globality of the problem - climate change already touches and will still touch everyone living on the planet - there is nowhere to escape. We also learned about simple steps each of us can take to mitigate climate change.”
