Mariupolian activist and representative, Maksym Borodin, was the winner of the national television competition "Novi Lideri" (New Leaders). He received (in conversion) almost € 32,000 for his air quality monitoring project in the city. Borodin attends the International Fighting Air Pollution Conference in the Industrial Cities of Europe, which is organized by Arnika and Ecoaction in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
"On behalf of the Arnika Association, I want to congratulate Maksym. We have known each other since last summer, and it is incredible to see how he keeps improving the situation in the city by his hard work,” states Kateřina Krejčová, Arnika's coordinator of the Ukrainian project and the Ostrava conference.
In the TV show, which was watched by the entire Ukraine, the participants were trying to get some support for their public beneficial projects. Ecology was not the only subject of focus for the project though. There were many plans focused on health, business, culture, and new technologies. The monitoring station would also be able to provide support in other industrial cities, like Kryvyi Rih and Zaporozhye.
“I am really grateful to all who supported our project. I have probably never gotten so many sincere gratulations,” said Maksym Borodin in Ostrava. However, as he said, his victory is only the beginning of his work. "The victory for the realization of the project was also a huge responsibility for those who supported the project," he said.
According to Krejcova, Borodin's victory can be the principal for his city. “Getting the monitoring station is a huge step in the whole campaign for a healthy air not only in Mauripol. Efficient negotiation with responsible authorities and managers of metallurgical factories is possible only on the basis of hard data," the coordinator added.
This year, Arnika, with experts from the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague, took samples of eggs, sediments, and sand from children's playgrounds in Mauripol, Dnipro, Zaporozhye, Kharkiv, and Kryvyi Rih. The results of the analysis, which will provide a report on the level of atmospheric pollution, will be published at the end of the year.
