Armenia now joined the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) to minimise the impact of the mining industry on the environment and lives of people in the affected communities. For the first time, representatives of local communities will participate in discussions on this topic.
The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) is the global standard to promote the open and accountable management of oil, gas and mineral resources. EITI seeks to strengthen public and corporate governance and provide the data to inform reforms for greater transparency and accountability in the extractives sector. The standard is now being implemented in 52 countries including Armenia.
Representatives of local communities and local NGOs are significantly involved in the EITI process, including Arnika's partner organisations EcoLur and CCMS (Community Center for Mobilization and Support).
The EcoLur information portal is following the EITI process in Armenia closely. For more information, visit their website.
