The Iagorlic Nature Reserve on the left bank of the Dniester river is an important site for numerous species of flora and fauna, especially for the fish, birds and other water-loving animals. There are a number of natural springs in that area, some of them not really accessible. A group of five Transnistrian volunteers decided to arrange one of those springs in such a way its drinking water will be accessible to both animals and tourists.
Before the work began, the spring on the Litvino tract had not been captured, seeping through several streams and flowing into a small creek, which in turn flows into the Iagorlic pond. Wild animals were using the pit near the spring as a watering hole. Boars were bathing in it and teared up the banks of the spring, making it temporarily unusable.
In July-August 2024, the spring was restored and arranged. To ensure a stable flow of water, silt and soil were removed from under the rock, where water-bearing veins flowed out on the surface. The water outlet was cleared and reinforced with natural stone, with drainage installed. The walls above the spring were also strengthened with natural stone masonry.
A stone with a hollowed-out trough was laid near the spring well, through which water from the spring flows into a low decorative basin (a drinking bowl for birds and small animals) and then overflows into a concrete reservoir, which serves as a drinking bowl for larger wild animals. During the work, shoots of marsh calamus (acorus calamus) were planted along the bed of the spring and around the pools.
This activity belongs among local measures we support on both river banks as a part of the project "Natura 2000 in Moldova: Promoting the European Approach to Nature Conservation in Moldova" together with our local partner Biotica Ecological Society and financed by the Transition Promotion Programme of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
