Waste water often leaks from mine in Akhtala

On several occasions this year, local residents have witnessed leakage of wastewater from the mine in Akhtala into the environment.

The water of grey, and sometimes yellow, colour got into the local rivers - firstly in the Akhtala river, which flows into the river Debed. In one case, damaged piping that leads the water to the tailing dump was discovered. The environmental inspection authorities were always notified about developments in this on-going situation. For now, the inspection has fined the mine owner once, with 200 000 AMD (approximately 400 EUR).
