How to understand the EU Water Framework Directive and how it can help to improve the environment

The Water Framework Directive of the European Union came into effect in 2000. It is one of the most ambitious pieces of EU legislation, creating a coherent legislative and policy framework for all water-related issues, with the ultimate goal being to achieve a high level of ecological quality of all European water sources by 2027. This study describes the main principles of the Water Framework Directive and shoes how experience and some of the main principles of the Water Framework Directive can also become an inspiration for countries outside the EU. Especially for those countries that have signed Association Agreements with the EU, the protection of their waters should be on a priority list.
