In December 2022, our partner organization Nexus3 Foundation and we sampled soil, river sediment, and eggs in areas of Indonesia polluted by landfill and waste burning. For example, we looked in Karawang, where they use plastic waste as fuel instead of wood to make lime. We also visited Kota Bekasi, where municipal waste is brought from Indonesia's capital Jakarta. Local people sort the waste by hand and then go either to a gigantic landfill resembling a mountain range or to an incinerator. Samples for comparison were taken in the unpolluted Cisarua area.
