Bosnia and Herzegovina is among the top five countries in Europe when it comes to biodiversity. There are 252 types of ecosystems and unique biotopes important from the European, as well as the global point of view. And rivers with their biodiversity there definitely belong to natural jewels of Europe. Just have a look...
From karst formations, romantic gorges and waterfalls, through branching and wild rivers creating wide riverbeds to meandering lowland streams with adjacent wetlands and with coastal and inland deltas, the rivers show us what wonders unbridled nature is capable of. There is a number of endemic species that can be found in Bosnian rivers, for example the globally endangered migratory specie of Danube salmon.
We are presenting you with four beautiful rivers worthy of territorial legislative protection. Despite its rich biodiversity, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country with the lowest percentage of protected nature in Europe. Only about three percent of country´s territory is protected, while the EU average reaches to almost 30 percent. This exhibition is a part of the project “Jewels of nature of Bosnia and Herzegovina” that we led together with BiH´s NGOs Centar za životnu sredinu, Center Dr. Stjepan Bolkay, Aarhus centar Sarajevo and Eko Gotuša. Together we strive to promote the beautiful nature of the BiH country and increase the number of protected areas.
The project „Jewels of Nature of Bosnia and Herzegovina“ was supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic within the framework of the Transition Promotion Programme. More information: www.eko.ba
