The Rzav River in Bosnia and Herzegovina will host an international camp of both hobbyist and professional biologists. They will map the local biodiversity and call for vigorous protection of Europe's last wild rivers.
The Biologer Camp, which will bring together experts from Croatia, Serbia, the Czech Republic and Bosnia and Herzegovina, will take place from 31 May to 5 June in Dobrun, Višegrad Municipality. Its results could be an important step towards the protection of the Dobrun-Rzav area, which has been designated as a future protected area in the spatial plan of Republika Srpska.
The camp is a continuation of the initiative started by the Eco Centre Višegrad to protect this precious part of nature. The collected data on biodiversity will be the basis for the creation of a founding document for the declaration of a protected area.
The event will also promote the platform of the same name - Biologer, which has been in existence for several years and is dedicated to the digitalisation of knowledge about biological diversity in the region. Biologer is a database of the region's biodiversity, built in collaboration with taxonomic experts and the commitment of an enthusiastic team, while encouraging the active participation of the community.
This year's Biologist Camp will cover a wide range of wildlife, including butterflies, beetles, dragonflies, wasps, spiders, amphibians, reptiles, birds and bats. Special attention will also be given to the exploration and mapping of speleological objects.
The camp is organised as part of the project "Natural jewels of Bosnia and Herzegovina: Strengthening the resilience and participation of local communities", jointly implemented by Arnika, the Centre for the Environment, the Centre Dr. Stjepan Bolkay and the Aarhus Centre in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic within the Transition Promotion Program.
